Variegated huesThe tones of trash are bright and cheerful ones,
The reds of labels, blues of wrappers, greens
Unseen in nature. Hear the angry moans—
Environmentalists deplore these scenes.
The hues of rust are variegated ones,
Pastels like mints and pinks and baby blues.
The garish, changed to watercolor tones
By rain or sea, now bows to gentle views.
Just see how nature tries to dull the bright
To colors easy on the eye: the gray
Of trunks and squirrels, brown of deer. In light
And shadow, even green is dapple's play.
To trash I say: you fought the color war
And lost. Next time, try pale, and less, not more.
