And was she strong enough
And was she strong enough to rise above
The waves that sought to bring her down, to choke
The oxygen and fill her lungs? She dove
Beneath the surface, rose enough and broke

The tension, gasped for air, resumed the dive,
Until the motion seemed quite natural.
At first they thought she couldn't be alive,
But strength, or grace, or practice, fooled them all.

Today she rules like one with arms of steel,
Invincible persistence over tides
And sun and seasons, over time's great wheel,
She's like Poseidon's daughter as she rides.

So daughters, do not drown beneath the sea,
You're strong enough to swim, to rise, to be.
