That dream at the gates of the day?
Alluring it lies at the skirts of the skies,
And ever so far away . . .

The books were stacked so far and wide
That one could never ebb the tide
Of knowledge great we all have known
Such self reliance within us sewn
Then up to heights we soared and lit
And pride our friend gave us the grit
To boast up high atop the stack
A place from which one ne're comes back
And with one foot fixed firmly down
We reached with hands the next renown
Unbalanced souls with books in hand
Cascaded down to dirt and sand
And yet from this , This pile and mess
We look among, the shelves' address
And one by one, Find each its place
To start anew, this human's race

Mascara smudged
Mascara smudged, then sliding past the eye,
The cheek, the fingertips, the pillow top,
Then lifted by the special cream to pry
It off the lashes. But it doesn't stop.

It comes again with each new day to limn
The eyes with contrast never found for real.
And what does heightened contrast say? Begin
With, Look at me! I'm strong, I fight. I steal

Your gaze to rest on me. I make you think
I'm stronger than I feel. You ponder if
You dare to conflagrate with one whose ink
Is penned like war paint. See, mascara's gift.

Mascara smudged, the fading battle cry.
The soap, the cream, now sleeps the gentle eye.
